Expertise and experience
ARC is a nationwide governmental research organization under Ministry
of Science and Technology which was founded 1902. The main activities
are concern applied agricultural research in response to the needs of
the various agricultural production systems. Frequent cooperation
exists with international research institutions such CGIAR centers,
ICARDA, ICRISAT and FAO as well as universities in Europe and overseas.
There are also close links with University of Kordofan and University
of Khartoum.
Role in this project
ARC will be responsible for activities in Sudan.
WP1: maintenance of measurement equipment and data collection (climate data,
eddy covariance data, site ancillary data).
WP2: providing mandatory parameters for basic site characterization.
Principal Investigator and collaborators
Bashir Awad El Tahir, Principal Investigator, is a research
scientist at the El Obeid Research Station (ARC) will finish his PhD
on study regarding "Nutrient balances under Acacia senegal management
systems in the semi-arid dry-lands areas of North Kordofan" in November
2005. Mr. El Tahir has long years of experience in project planning and
management. He actively participated in various multidisciplinary teams
that conducted several surveys and research studies regarding, diagnostic
surveys of farming systems, bio-diversity in Greater Kordofan. His work,
include several relevant aspects to the traditional agroforestry systems
used in western Sudan (Bush-fallow) including carbon sequestration and
biogeochemistry. Mr. El Tahir has been responsible for the management
and maintenance of climatic measurement at the Sudanese site (Demokeya)
since 2002 and has been responsible for management and maintenance of
the eddy covariance flux measurement system in Demokeya since 2004.
